Abstract

Rice farming is a strategic sector for national food security, however, its sustainability is increasingly threatened by the declining number of farming households and low levels of interest in rice farming activities. This situation is also evident in South Nias Regency, where interest in rice farming is influenced by economic conditions, institutional support, technology adoption, government policies, and low self-confidence. This study aims to formulate a model to increase interest in rice farming. The research was conducted in March 2025.  The quantitative research approach utilized the Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) method. The results indicate that economic, institutional, technological, and government policy factors significantly influence interest in rice farming, both directly and indirectly through the mediation of self-efficacy. Self-efficacy emerges as a strong mediator that amplifies the influence of these determining factors on rice farmers’ interest. These findings indicate that the decline in the number of rice-farming households is driven not only by structural constraints but also by low self-efficacy among rice farmers, which hinders the sustainability of effective rice farming. Therefore, strengthening interest in rice farming requires a comprehensive strategy that integrates the development of self-efficacy, economic incentives, institutional strengthening, technological support, and coherent government policies.
